Problems with Cricinfo.com

Postby loserfederer » Sun Mar 13, 2011 6:08 pm

www.ESPNcricinfo.com is an extremely problematic site when it comes to blocking ads. I have had to manually add filters for this site every few days to keep the ads away. Right now I'm using these filters:

i.imgci.com/homepage/india*
i.imgci.com/scorecard/india*swf
moneygram_peace%20125x125.gif
toshiba_rev_ph2_300x100.swf

But they change very frequently. So, a permanent solution will be appreciated.

a permanent solution is not possible if the file names keep changing.

I also don't see those ads myself or I'd have attempt to remove them.

I did see one of the ones you mentioned and I was able to hide the entire area so any ad that appears there will be removed.

For anything else you need to report it to me.

I think those ads are only visible from India. But on another note, even my custom filters don't always work. If I hit Ctrl + F5 on Internet Explorer they are blocked. But they come back again and again. I have cleared the IE cache, but the problem persists.

How does it look with the latest filter list?

Thank you for your quick responses, Jeff. But unfortunately, the even the latest filters don't block those ads. But more frustratingly, even my custom filters are behaving like hit and miss. Sometimes the ads are blocked, and at others they show up. Mind you, these things are only happening on Cricinfo website. All the other websites are functioning perfectly.

Here is the screenshot:

I'm referring to the "Tata Sky" ad on the top right hand corner, and the "Win India" ad above the scorecard on the right hand side. Those are annoying flash ads. There is also a "Toshiba" ad near the bottom of the page which is not present in this screenshot.

Neither one is on my end so I'm not sure what I can do...

The site still looks very clean.

I think those ads are only viewable from India.

But can you suggest any solution to the problem that I am facing with custom filters? If I use the filter i.imgci.com/homepage/india* the ads don't show up. But I have press Ctrl + F5 for that to happen. I think there is some bug with caching.

I'm afraid not.

The fact that other sites work just fine pretty much eliminates any caching bug in Ad Muncher.

It may not be the correct filter but since I don't get those ads I can't be sure.

v4.91 will be available soon, lets see how it goes after that is released.

OK, going throught the logs, I have come across this:
Aborted filtering of connection due to unrecognised content encoding [http://www.espncricinfo.com/]

Does this ring any bell?

Yes it does.

That means the server is incorrectly configured and is sending back content that Ad Muncher can not handle.

Ad Muncher is unable to filter that broken content.

So, that basically means unless the guys at Cricinfo.com decide to "fix" their website, we will continue to see those ads indefinitely? So maybe they are intentionally doing this so that ads can't be blocked?

No they aren't doing it on purpose. It's just incompetence.

When we add gzip in a future version we will be able to filter it, until then, yes, you will see ads there.
