Gmail Ads Not Blocked, Using http://

Postby J-Mac » Tue Jan 24, 2012 4:55 pm

I know that Ad Muncher cannot block Gmail ads when using https:, but I find they are not blocked on http: either. I don’t know, maybe Google changes things too fast for AM to keep up with?

Thank you.

What do I "think" is an ad? Anything on the web page that is trying to sell me something and is not related to the page content itself.

Why do you think I don’t know what an "ad" is?

Do things appear in the logs tab when you are on that page?

Jeff,

I didn't see anything in the logs but in going through "My Filters" I found one that was for Gmail. Pretty sure I know what happened now...

This is a new computer - just received it and set it up last week - and of course when I installed AM it was bare of any custom filters and program settings. However I had copied ALL files from the old computer's internal HDDs onto a new 2 TB external drive. So I went looking for my old AM settings, or at least a backup. Unfortunately the only AM backup I found was a few months old, so I restored from that one and picked up a number of old custom filters that had since been deleted. So that backup apparently had something in there that didn't filter the Gmail page.

I had thought that Ad Muncher had an "autosave" or automatic backup feature like most of the apps I run; apparently I was mistaken. Anyway, I think that was the problem: I had to load an older backup to restore my AM configuration and it had some custom filters that had been deleted. Now I must go through it and weed out any other "resurrected" filters.

Thank you.

You should delete them all in fact, start fresh. :)

keep a backup just in case you need one or two of them.

also make sure you are using this version:

Could somebody explain to me why can't we block the Ads in https mode? I read that there is Firefox extension that would do it - if they can why we can't?

OK, works for chrome:

Hmmmm, second time Ad Muncher does let me down - hmmm.

ad muncher is outside of your browser so the encrypted connections are encrypted...

all browser based add-ons get SSL decryption for free. they see it after the browser decrypts it.

SSL decryption is something we plan on adding this year.

users will be able to enable/disable it only for the domains they want.

Three things:

1. It would be nice if you will add this question into FAQ.

2. If I understood you correctly AdMuncher works on the traffic coming from browser. How SSL decryption will help? I was under the impression that you can't decrypt SSL traffic without the passwords - and those you will have only if you are working inside the browser. Would you be so kind and elaborate further?

3. Did you consider adding browser Plugin to your great tool?

1.) no time.

2.) we'll had our own root cert to your browser. then decrypt and re-encrypt the connection.

3.) of course not, then it wouldn't be Ad Muncher which works with every program.

OK, it sounds reasonable.

When do you think it is coming? Ability to work with https traffic is much requested abilities in our days.

You should consider adding FAQ, however, since all major mail clients are switching to https and people will get angry.

I highly value your program and found it to be by far better than any other on the market.

This year most likely.

we are no longer in the habit of promising features on specific dates.

Jeff,

I find some of your responses to your customers asking for advice very flippant, and not just in this thread. I've just downloaded a trial of Ad Muncher based on information that your software would block the intrustive Gmail ads, but they do not. Yes, I have disabled HTTPS. I've cleared my cache. I "know" what an ad is. Rather than reply "What exactly do you think is an ad" or "They're blocked here" or "Not sure what to tell ya"-- all pert, useless responses to a user asking for guidance, you could try to actually solve the problem. "It's working here" is never a sufficient answer for anyone in software development or tech support to give. It's lazy and annoyed sounding.

If I can't figure this out on my own -- as it appears I will have to, given your inadequate response to this problem -- I will have to uninstall AM. And not because it isn't otherwise a decent product, but because of the way you treat your customers.

Have a nice day.
