Something fishy

Postby broman.martin » Tue Jul 31, 2012 1:59 pm

Greetings all!

So, I'm very happy with this product, and it has never really failed me. Nor has this forum done so, as help was always given; quick and painlessly!

As of today I noticed something strange happening. Ad-Muncher just started to fail in munching sites. I tried to reset all configurations, and it did the trick. Then, a few minutes later it began again. No ads were removed! In addition, the Toolbar is not present at all, other than on the forum. And then it only displays the Ad-Muncher logo and text (the furthest left part, the rest is gone).

This is what I have:

Ad-Muncher v4.93.33707/4182 (beta, of course on both ends)
Windows 7 ultimate x64
Eset Nod32 antivirus 5.0.95.0
Google Chrome Version 22.0.1221.0 dev-m (but it's not related to Chrome, as it fails in IE too as well as in SRware Iron -latest)
And several other small programs that I use on a daily basis, and has never given me any conflicts.

And when I came to the forum and didn't see anyone else having this issue, it has to be something on my end. Any thoughts regarding this? And maybe I should also point out that I have not installed any kind of software or added new hardware to my computer. But now that I tested it again, it did remove ads, but my filters where not included even though the box to use them is ticked in. This is kind of driving me nuts.

Is Eset the only 3rd party networking or security application you have installed?

Are there any error messages on the Logs tab of Ad Muncher during the times it fails?

check under the triggered filters category.

Have you installed any new software recently?

Could you reboot into safe mode with networking, launch Ad Muncher and see if filtering is reliable again?

On both an XP and a Windows 7 machine here I have zero filtering lapses.

Yes, Eset is the only 3rd party software that can affect networking; just not sure how. Don't even have a firewall installed.
Sadly, I've always had logging disabled, so that gives us nothing. However, when I booted into safe mode it worked fine, and when I came back to normal state it too worked as it should. And, even my old configuration file was loaded with success. Strange! Guess my computer just had a creepy hiccup.

Yeah, so the problem did return. And fearing I had somehow been infected by something nasty I decided to reinstall windows. It did the trick, for about a day. Then it began again. I've checked under all categories in log tab, but there are no errors what so ever. I've run numerous antivirus scans, as well as spybot. They both come up empty. There are no suspicious processes in process explorer either. I'm out of options here. Is this a sign that I should stay away from the internet :?:

Does Ad Muncher give you an error?

Any browser add-ons you've installed?

No errors from ad-muncher.

Even though I have 3 extensions that I use, I've already ruled those out as I've removed them. The thing is that it's not just in chrome, but all browser that I've tried (IE, FireFox).

So after reinstalling Windows it worked for a day.

When it broke had you installed new software?

It has to be related to something you've installed.

Ad Muncher hasn't stopped filtering for me on XP and Windows 7, not even once.

Well, I can't rule that out. But what software would that be? I can't think of any one that could affect ad-muncher.

This is a HiJackThis log, if it is useful in any way?

I'm afraid not.

You need to use msconfig to disable things until you find the right one.

Then we can go from there.

I now did get an error message from ad-muncher saying it couldn't filter connections :( wasn't fast enough to take a screen shot before I rebooted.
