How about porting to the Mac?

Postby Ziger » Fri Mar 17, 2006 4:30 pm

I have been using Ad Munch for years, and it is the best thing ever. I love the way it cleans up and speeds up my connectivity. Control of my environment, suppression of pop-ups and the like, I carry it as one of my key tools to every site I work at.

Now couldn't you please think about porting it to work on Mac OSX? I see some commentary about porting to Linux. But the Mac platform could use a strong ad supression tool - and no AdBlock doesn't count.

Please?

Thanks in advance,

Zig.

Well, from my understanding, linux support will come once 5.0 goes gold. And once linux support is added, porting to mac should be pretty painless. My best advice, wait until 5.0 as I am sure Murray has this planned

Hey,

Yeah I believe he said there are zero plans to right now, however it should be reliativly "easy" in the future. Because the engine is being re-written in the C programming lanuage and does not use a single winapi. That is if I understood him correctly. ;) I hope I did. :p

Perhaps he could confirm.

cya,

Will

Porting Ad Muncher to *nix and the Mac are indeed planned.

When that will be though is the part we don't know.

It depends on a number of factors.

Well, yeah thats why I said right now. ;)

Yeah I guess if 3000 people buy admuncher and ask for *nix and Mac support that I guess I'll see it before I die. :P

Well, I haven't been able to find anything that would give AdMuncher a real run for its money and I have tried. The Adblocker stuff for Firefox is okay, but not particularly robust - and it needs some serious work on the UI. Safari has PithHelmet which is definitely better than AdBlocker, but again, not very robust, and both are tied to the browsers they work on, so keeping things in sync are a pain. And lets just forget the IE zone.

So, I sit, I wait, I hope :-)

Well, I and I'm sure a few others feel your pain.

AdMuncher is almost the only program that's stopping me from switching to a Mac. ;)

It's really not that bad without it. I guess I got 'reused' to ads since I switched to Mac. But using CSS to get rid of most ads works alright for me.
You don't know what you are missing out on :) Mac is awesome even without AM.
(They should really be paying me for this....)

Hi Jeff & Murray,

It's been over a year since you've mentioned the words Mac and Ad Muncher in the same sentance.

As a forced Win user at work, and a Mac user at home, I'd sure like to hear any updates about Ad Muncher for the Mac.

Thanks much,

Keep on blocking!

We still want to, it's still a long ways off.

Has there been any progress with a version of Ad Muncher for the Mac (OSX) platform?? I have been a rabid fan of Ad Muncher on my PC for years, but just added an iMac to my life...and I miss Ad Muncher terribly when surfing in OSX!! :(

Not to put words in the AM guys' mouth, but I think it's still a ways off.
I am with you though, been using a Mac for about 2-3 years now and got used to ads again....

the problems i personally see for porting am to other platforms:
1) linux users often tend to bitch at companies who actually undergo the work of porting their work; but charge money for their product. (been there!)
2) the community is pretty small, and their intarwebz is kinda focussed around firefox. even if you'd write about why AMs ad filtering features are so much better than those with firefox + adblock+ those articles would usually be flamed to the ground. most people there don't argue with their brain, but only with a passion for 'their' stuff only. also, many are strongly against closed source code. i doubt murray would like to spread his code around just to make some linux users happy.
3) although mac os x is on the rise, the amount of the apple market share is only at like 5%. i do believe strongly that murray doesn't get enough customers in to make a living off of ad muncher, or else there'd be way more improvements in a shorter timeframe. would a 5% increase in income justify all the work to port it? to be honest, i highly doubt it.

the above mentioned stuff is only my point of view.. bla bla bla *disclaim*. has nothing to do with anything i ever read from murray or jeff, or anyone affiliated with admuncher.
